Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, the Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, has reaffirmed the government’s strong commitment to prioritizing infrastructure, particularly the transportation sector, as a key driver of national development. Speaking at the 2025 Indonesia Railway Conference in Jakarta, the minister stated that transportation is not merely a component of growth but a core priority for the nation. He underscored its vital role in fostering robust economic growth, ensuring equitable regional development, and promoting long-term environmental sustainability throughout Indonesia. This commitment is reflected in the government’s ongoing investment in enhancing connectivity across the vast archipelago, from the westernmost islands of Sumatra to the easternmost province of Papua. The primary goal of this extensive development is to accelerate the movement of goods and people, which is essential for facilitating more inclusive growth and ensuring that the benefits of development are shared more evenly across all regions of the country.
Leveraging Rail and Maritime for Sustainable Connectivity
In his address, Minister Yudhoyono highlighted the strategic importance of both the railway and maritime sectors in creating a comprehensive and sustainable transportation system. He pointed out that these modes of transport are crucial for developing a network that is not only low-emission and efficient but also affordable and accessible to a wide population. The minister specifically noted that rail transport offers a distinct competitive advantage over road networks, which are increasingly plagued by congestion and capacity limitations. He further explained that technological advancements have made modern rail systems faster, safer, and more energy-efficient, reinforcing their role in the nation’s future transportation strategy. These improvements align perfectly with the government’s dual objectives of economic acceleration and environmental responsibility, making rail a cornerstone of the national development plan.
Highlighting the Key Advantages of Railway Transport
Minister Yudhoyono articulated three primary strengths of the railway sector that set it apart from other modes of transportation. The first and most significant advantage is its superior capacity and on-time performance. For example, a single freight train has the capacity to transport a load equivalent to that of 300 trucks, while a passenger train can carry over a thousand people, demonstrating remarkable efficiency in a single trip. The second key strength is fuel efficiency. The minister provided compelling data, stating that trains are capable of traveling approximately 200 kilometers on just one liter of fuel, in stark contrast to trucks, which average only 57 kilometers per liter. Finally, he emphasized the environmental benefits of rail transport, particularly in terms of lower carbon emissions. These factors collectively underscore the government’s strategic focus on harnessing the full potential of the railway sector to achieve its ambitious goals for sustainable and inclusive national development.
